M. W. B. James Edwin Miller
James Edwin Miller was born January 26, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Henry William and Marie Clark Miller. In 1935 he moved with his parents to Southern California where he spent his childhood and teen years. After graduation from Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, California, he entered UCLA and received a commission through the ROTC program in 1952 as an Infantry Second Lieutenant in the Army. He was called to active duty in 1953 and subsequently received his wings as an Army Aviator in 1955. His overseas service included Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. Most Worshipful Brother Miller retired from active duty on September 1, 1973, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and settled in Columbus, Georgia. His military awards and decorations are many for he was an outstanding soldier throughout the years of service he rendered to our great country.
Most Worshipful Brother Miller was married to the former Elizabeth Shirley Hollister in 1953 and to this union were born two sons, Paul M. Miller, who resides in Columbus, Georgia, and Clarke C. Miller of Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Millers are proud grandparents of two grandsons, Cameron J. Miller (wife, Heather) of Austin, Texas, and Derek J. Miller of Atlanta, Georgia.
After retirement from the Army, Most Worshipful Brother Miller returned to college and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration from Columbus College (now Columbus State University), graduating Summa cum Laude. During this time, he and Liz formed a retail and wholesale craft supply business, which they sold in 1983. Liz continued for many years to work in the craft industry as a freelance designer, demonstrator, and instructor. The Millers are active members of St. Luke, United Methodist Church of Columbus, where they both have served in a variety of positions.
In 1948, Brother Miller became a member of Glendale (California) Chapter, Order of DeMolay, and served as the Master Councilor in 1950. He served as Scribe Advisor for the Chapter and subsequently received the Chevalier Degree and the Active Legion of Honor. In 1999, while serving as Grand Master, he was presented his gold 50-year DeMolay pin and on June 26, 1999, he was elected an Honorary Member of the International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay. He is an active member of the Georgia Statewide cast that confers the Legion of Honor. Brother Miller has served for many years as a member and Chairman of the Advisory Council of Columbus Chapter, Order of DeMolay.
Most Worshipful Brother Miller received his Masonic Blue Lodge Degrees in Daleville Lodge No. 903, of Daleville, Alabama and was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on March 14, 1959. He served as Secretary and was serving as Senior Warden of the Lodge when he was transferred to Korea in 1960. In 1979, Brother Jim affiliated with Fort Benning Lodge No. 579, F. & A. M., of Columbus, and subsequently served as Worshipful Master in 1984. He later served in the Masonic Education and Leadership Development program of the Grand Lodge from 1989 until April of 1992. Upon the untimely death of Right Worshipful Brother Hoyt Padgett in April of 1992, Brother Miller was appointed to the Grand Lodge Line as Third Grand Steward by Right Worshipful Brother Joseph P. Suttles. He served through the Grand Lodge Line and was installed in the office of Most Worshipful Grand Master on October 21, 1998.
After completing his year as the Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Miller continued his service to the Grand Lodge in a variety of positions. He served as Chairman of the Appeals and Grievances Committee in 2000, as Chairman of the Grand Lodge Long Range Planning Committee from 2001 through 2006, as a member for many years of the Educational and Historical Commission and as a member of the Grand Lodge Jurisprudence Committee.
Most Worshipful Brother Miller was instrumental in the formation of a “daylight lodge” in Columbus and served as Worshipful Master while the Lodge was Under Dispensation from August 2008 until the Charter was received in October 2008. He was then the “Charter Master” of West Georgia Daylight Lodge No. 760 until December of 2009.
Brother and Companion Miller was exalted in Fort Benning Chapter No. 73, Royal Arch Masons in 1979, and served as High Priest in 1983. He served as District Grand Deputy to the Grand High Priest in 1983—1985, was elected Grand Master the Second Veil in 1985 and served as Grand High Priest in 1991—1992. He received the Order of the High Priesthood in 1984 and served as Excellent President of the Order of the High Priesthood in 1999. He was greeted in Fort Benning Council No. 73, Royal and Select Masters and served as Illustrious Master in 1984 and received the Order of the Silver Trowel in 1985. He was knighted in St. Aldemar Commandery No. 3, Knights Templar in 1979 and served as Eminent Commander in 1987—1988. He received the Knight Commander of the Temple in 1994 and the Knight Crusader of the Cross in 2002. He received the Knights Templar Cross of Honor. Sir Knight Miller was appointed as a member of the Knights Templar Educational Committee of the Grand Commandery in 1993 and served for many years as Chairman of the Committee.
Brother, Companion and Sir Knight Miller was received as a Knight in Georgia Priory No. 39, Knights of the York Cross of Honor in 1988 and served as Prior in 1993—1994. He was a Charter member of Luther G. Palmer York Rite College No. 123 in Atlanta and was the Charter Governor of Chattahoochee York Rite College No. 166 in Columbus. He received the Order of the Purple Cross in 1994 and served as Grand Governor in Georgia for the York Rite Sovereign College of North America from 1996 to 2002.
Illustrious Brother Miller received the Scottish Rite Degrees in the Valley of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in 1965 and affiliated with the Valley of Columbus, Georgia in 1976. He served for many years as the Assistant Director of Work and as the Valley General Secretary from 1986 until he retired in 2003. He received the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour in 1979 and was Coroneted as an Inspector General, Honorary, of the 33rd Degree in 1985. He continued to serve the Valley after his retirement from the Secretary’s position as a member of the Executive Committee and as President of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Columbus, Inc. For many years, he was the Grand Master of Ceremonies in the state-wide cast conferring the Knight Commander of the Court of Honour and also served as the Grand Sword Bearer and Grand Organist for the state-wide team conferring the 33rd Degree.
Most Worshipful Brother Miller became a member of the National Sojourners in 1959 while he was stationed at Ft. Rucker, Alabama and also that year, he was made a member of the Heroes of ’76. While attending the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in 1965, he affiliated with the Sojourners Chapter and Heroes Camp at that post. After becoming active in the Masonic Bodies of Columbus, Georgia, Brother Miller affiliated with Ft. Benning Chapter No. 8, National Sojourners, serving as the President of the Chapter. He also affiliated with Daniel Morgan Camp, Heroes of ’76 and served as Commander of the Camp.
Most Worshipful Brother Miller was a member of many other appendant bodies, which included:
Muscogee Conclave, Order of the Red Cross of Constantine, serving as Sovereign in 1989 and, beginning in 1991, as Recorder for many years.
Charter member of Georgia Council No. 304, Allied Masonic Degrees, and Sovereign Master in 1999. He is a Charter member and Treasurer of River City Council No. 526, Allied Masonic Degrees.
Ft. Benning Chapter No. 278, Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron in 1982-1983 and 2002-2003, and for many years as the Treasurer.
